As part of the professional development component, ALPFA Boston’s Investments initiative offers a CFA Level I Review Program. The next program is scheduled to begin on April 16th, 2013 and will prepare candidates for the exam to be held next June of 2013. The CFA Review program is taught by Guillermo Tello, CFA, CFP, Institutional Portfolio Strategist at Bank of America, Luis Roman, PhD, Investment Risk Manager at State Street Corporation and Jesus Lopez, CFA, Assistant Vice President at State Street Corporation. Classes will cover the following Study Sessions:
- 13 and 14 - Equities
- 15 and 16 - Fixed-Income
- 17 - Derivatives
- 18 - Alternative Investments
The review program will run on the following dates from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.
- April 16, 23 & 30
- May 7, 14 and 21
- Exam will be held on June 1st, 2013
Participants have the option to purchase the review materials used in class provided by Kaplan Schweser. Materials ( two books – mind maps and problems) will be available to ALPFA candidates for $65 per student.

Instructor Biographies
Luis Roman, PhD
Luis is a Vice President of State Street and a member of the State Street Global Advisor’s Investment Risk Management team. In this role, Luis is responsible for risk management across strategies within the firm’s Fixed Income group. He is also currently an adjunct professor at the International Business School at Brandeis University where he teaches classes in risk management, fixed income and investments. Prior to joining SSgA, Luis worked as a Quantitative Analyst at Putnam Investments providing quantitative tools of risk management and valuation to emerging markets, structured products, and municipal markets teams. Before that, he spent six years holding professorship positions in the departments of mathematics at the University of California, in Irvine, California, and at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, in Worcester, Massachusetts. During his time in academia he co-authored research papers in financial mathematics, and stochastic differential equations, and taught undergraduate and graduate courses in financial mathematics, probability, statistics, and numerical methods. Luis earned a M.S. from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, both in applied mathematics.
Guillermo Tello, CFA, CFP®
Guillermo serves as an Institutional Portfolio Strategist. Guillermo has been with Bank of America and predecessor banks for 15 years, the last seven involved with institutional client investment management activities. He has held positions at Fleet Boston Financial and Bank Boston as Fixed-Income Portfolio Manager and Director in the Global Treasury group, respectively. At Bank Boston, he spent time in the Latin America region heading Treasury activities in Mexico and Peru. He earned a BA degree in Finance at Universidad del Pacifico in Lima, Peru, an MBA degree in Finance and M.I.S. from the University of Rhode Island and an MBA degree in Finance from Universidad de Madrid in Spain. Guillermo is a CFA charterholder, CFP® certificant and is a former member of the Board and Vice President for Programs at the Boston Security Analysts Society in Boston, Massachusetts. He is an instructor for the CFA Review Program at the Society.
Jesus Lopez, CFA
Jesus Lopez is an assistant vice president for State Street Corporation. In this capacity, he oversees over $600 million in IT allocations across business units. Mr. Lopez is also a member of State Street’s Latin American Professionals Group’s steering committee. Prior to joining State Street in 2011, Mr. Lopez was manager, financial analysis for the Boston Options Exchange, an all-electronic equity options market that is jointly owned by the TMX Group and seven broker dealers. Before that, he was a senior financial / systems analyst for the Boston Stock Exchange. Mr. Lopez holds his Master of Science in Finance from Suffolk University, and a Bachelor of Business Administration, Finance from the Universidad Autonoma de San Luis Potosi, Mexico. He also earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and is a member of the CFA Institute and the Boston Security Analysts Society.
